Earth Campaign 08

April 22, 2008 / by alisonrummens

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.  ~Native American Proverb

Earth day was created to bring awareness to the ecological problem surrounding the future of our planet. While there are two different claims about the origins of earth day, two different stories and two different days, the idea is the same.  Some claim earth day to be celebrated on the spring equinox, other on April 22. But both parties agree that the point is to protect our planet by education and practice.
The Environmental Protection Agency says that earth day has evolved into "a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment."  The effects of pollution and deforestation have taking a hefty toll on our planet, one that seems to be bringing about a hopeless future. Many people are uneducated about these occurrences and so are unable to help. By creating a day of awareness we are able to spread information about the importance of being green and thinking about our planet.
The city of Chico organized a restoration project taking place at for different areas in Chico. The celebration took place on Saturday promoting cleanliness of our environment. Chico State had/has a few events including an ecofest that took place on Saturday as well, a veggie feed in the free speech area and a breathing workshop that take place today.
No matter how or when you do it, taking care of the planet is a good thing.
